Tony Cary-Barnard is General Manager of the Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler. He started his career with Westin in Toronto and has since held several senior roles at the GM and VP levels with O’Neill Hotels & Resorts, SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts in various city and resort markets across Canada. One of Tony’s career highlights was leading the restoration and grand reopening of the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton, Alberta.
Tony is on the Board of Directors of Tourism Whistler and the Hotel Association of Whistler. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Jasper Park Chamber of Commerce, the Okanagan-Similkameen Tourism Association and the Alberta Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA). He is a graduate of the hospitality management program at Ryerson University, Toronto and has his MBA from Guelph University, Ontario. In 2006 Tony was given special recognition by the AHLA with the Annual Chairman’s Award for his contribution to the Alberta hotel industry.
Tony has lived in South America, the UK and many parts of Canada and is bilingual in Spanish and English with a basic touch of French. Tony and his wife Michelle live in Whistler. They have two children.
Do you Ski or Snowboard? My wife and I were avid skiers when we lived in Jasper and have been thrilled to be back in the mountains with incredible Whistler Blackcomb and Whistler Olympic Park at our doorstep!
What is your favorite summer activity in Whistler? Although the golf courses are great in Whistler, I recently took up biking. The trails through Whistler are amazing. It is a great way to explore all of Whistler and stay fit as well!
What is the most memorable place you have ever travelled? Visiting Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes was an amazing experience.
What is your favorite thing to cook at home? Pasta or pizza of any kind!
What’s your favorite local’s secret in Whistler? Camp Lifestyle & Coffee in Function Junction!
What’s one thing you can’t travel without? My mini iPad!
What is your favorite part about working in a hotel? You work hard engaging daily with all your team members and the rewards are immediately visible when you see the many happy guests checking in and enjoying your services!
